Beginning in April 1996 with just one ferry, the Seatruck company specialised as an Irish Sea freight-only ferry operation, running between Warrenpoint in Ireland and Heysham. Now, in 2021, they are celebrating their 25th anniversary as a major force in moving road freight across the Irish Sea, owning eight modern purpose-built roll on roll off freight ferries and operating three ferry routes.

In The Seatruck Story: Celebrating 25 years of service on the Irish Sea, Matt Davies, examines in depth the history of the Seatruck company, from their modest beginnings through to the successful operation they are now. Whilst Seatruck is UK based, its parent group is now the Danish shipping company the Clipper Group and their backing enabled the company to invest in purpose-built vessels. Designed to be the maximum size the Heysham port could accommodate, the vessels are described by the term P-class. These roll on roll off vessels were built by Astilleros de Huelva, a Spanish company who had previously built four similar vessels, for an Estonian company, which Seatruck then bought to create their R-class.
