In Colour Change Volume 1: The RTs Jim Blake gives us the first of two volumes in which he presents the story of London Transport’s livery changes. In this volume Jim covers the RT bus livery, which between 1956 and 1972 changed colour from red to green, and vice versa, for a number of reasons.
It is common knowledge that during the 1950s and 1960s many red RTs were overhauled in green to replace roofbox RTs in the Country Area. What is not generally appreciated is that many more Country RTs were overhauled, or merely repainted, in red - in 1959 to replace trolleybuses, then between 1964 and 1969 to supersede early roofbox RTs and many of the last RTLs and RTWs in the Central Area. Jim presents the details of most of these changes by means of a series of largely unpublished photographs which he has selected from his archives. The images were all taken throughout the London Transport area and each one is accompanied by a detailed caption.
