This book looks at the effect the railways had on the outcome of World War 1 in the region known as the Somme sector in northern France. Looks at the building of the metre gauge and light 60 cm gauge railways in 1915-16 and their use during the war. Also looks at the role these railways played after the war in the reconstruction and recovery of the devastated area.

Some of the lines remained open and served the sugar beet industry through as late as the 1960s. Also contains a section showing what remains to be seen of these railways, describes how to find key locations today, and where rolling stock can still be seen. Some walks are also included for those who wish to explore the area. Well illustrated throughout with black & white photographs and maps.
