In the summer of 1966 three railway enthusiasts set out on a journey through Portugal and Spain. Their goal was simple – to witness and record the last days of steam on the CP and RENFE before these majestic locomotives vanished from the rails for ever. The trio experienced the charm, challenge, and excitement of railway exploration in unfamiliar countries of a bygone age.
The book presents a carefully chosen selection of photographs, some in colour, from that remarkable trip: vivid scenes of steam (and occasional other power), grand and modest stations, and glimpses of everyday railway life and work in 1960s Iberia.
Photographs largely cover northern Portugal and Spain's Mediterranean coast, with trips inland as far as Sevilla, Cordoba and Zaragoza. Extensive captions accompany each photograph, providing background information about the location, locomotive and train services pictured. 112 pages.
