These routes required special steam locomotives, with extra power and stronger brakes. Other lines used banking locomotives to help push trains up the gradients.

This DVD contains footage of some of Germany's steepest lines, including archive footage and also more recent scenes of preserved steam locomotives tackling the gradients.
