The Re 4/4 is the largest fleet of electric locos ever built in Switzerland, with the Re 4/4(II) having been manufactured and put into service over a period of 21 years, from 1964 to 1985. This followed the success of the older Re 4/4(I), SBB’s first bogie electric locomotive, introduced in 1946. Also part of the Re 4/4 family were the 21 Re 4/4(III) locomotives which were built for use on steeply graded routes. Such was the success of the Re 4/4(II) that a number of these highly versatile locos remain in frontline service today.
This DVD features present day and archive footage of Re 4/4 locos, known today as Re 420, at work on a variety of passenger and freight services across Switzerland. These include SBB Cargo’s Re 421 and Re 620 variants, Swiss Express Class 430, BLS Re 4/4, and privately owned and preserved examples.
