As early as the 1930s, the Deutschen Reichsbahn was introducing diesel multiple units and railcars to replace steam power on lesser-used branch lines. These included the VT 133 and VT 137 railcars, which were effectively a small bus on rails.

Diesel railcars were also used on narrow gauge lines by Deutschen Reichsbahn. This DVD looks at the history of diesel units operating in East Germany from the early examples through to more modern designs.

Footage includes archive and also more recent footage of preserved railcars. German commentary. 58 minutes running time.
