Manchester is steeped in railway history going back almost 200 years to the opening of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, the world’s first inter-city railway, in 1830. Today, the conurbation boasts over 200 km of rail routes, with a number of projects in recent years that have created new journey opportunities such as the Hazel Grove Chord, the Windsor Link, the Manchester Airport line and the Ordsall Chord.

Mike Rhodes has compiled this fascinating collection of railway photographs from Greater Manchester and neighbouring areas of Cheshire, Derbyshire and Lancashire mostly dating from between the 1980s and the present day. A variety of diesel and electric units and loco-hauled passenger and freight trains are featured, both on the national rail network and on the preserved East Lancashire Railway.

Some Metrolink tram photographs are also included, with Metrolink being Britain’s most extensive light rail network and an important part of Greater Manchester’s public transport system. The photographs are mostly arranged in two-per-page format, with each having a detailed caption. Approximately 200 photographs, mostly in colour. 96 pages.
