An album of photographs looking at the work of Class 20 Locomotives throughout Scotland from the late 1970s to the 2020s. During this period, the class has operated over virtually the entire rail network of Scotland, sometimes singly in the Highlands but more often hauling local freight traffic or working in pairs pulling heavy coal trains in the Central belt.

The book begins with an eight-page introduction describing the development and main features of Class 20 locomotives, leading on to their deployment across the country and with particular reference to use in Scotland. It describes how the class became one of the most successful designs arising from the 1955 Modernisation Plan, with some examples still in main line service over 60 years after first entering service.

This is followed by a short selection of black & white photographs dating from the late 1970s and early 1980s, and then around 165 colour photographs, most of which date from the 1980s. All the images are accompanied by detailed captions.

As well as the familiar heavy freight trains, the book includes a few examples of the class in passenger service and many images of Class 20s in unusual or unexpected locations. Depot and works illustrations are also included. 96 pages.
