The Withered Arm: Southern Lines to the Far West (Unique)

£9.99
Back Order

A superb album of black & white photos from the former Southern Railway lines in Devon and Cornwall.

The book starts with a short history of the lines covered, and there is a map of the network on the back cover. Lines featured include those serving Ilfracombe, Bude, Padstow, Callington, and Barnstaple–Halwill–Wadebridge. Today, the only former SR line west of Exeter still extant are Exeter–Barnstaple, Yeoford–Okehampton, and Plymouth–Gunnislake, plus a short section of the Bodmin–Padstow line in use as the Bodmin & Wadebridge heritage railway, although some of the closed sections are under active consideration for reopening.

Most of the photos are of steam-hauled passenger trains, many of them one- or 2-coach local trains. There are also a few freights, DMUs, Bulleid Pacifics hauling the famous “Atlantic Coast Express” and “Devon Belle”, a Class 35 “Hymek” and a North British diesel-hydraulic Type 2.

64 pages. Approximately 60 black & white photos. Softback.
