Locomotive scrapyards have long exerted a fascination for many enthusiasts, including Jeffery Grayer, who has compiled Scrapyards of Steam using images from the Transport Treasury Archive. In this volume he looks at some favourite classes, some of which did not find a home in the pantheon of preservation.
Featured in this volume are 20 privately run Contractors' scrapyards, with sites ranging geographically from South Wales to Scotland and taking in the Midlands, South Yorkshire and the North East on the way. The scale of these yards ranged from the massive, which often consigned hundreds of locomotives to extinction, to the smaller operations that handled just a few examples.
