Author, Robin Jones, recounts how the A4 Pacifics designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London and North Eastern Railway, rose in popularity to become one of most recognised steam locomotives. He covers Gresley’s ambition to beat the world steam railway speed record, after losing it to Stanier’s streamlined ‘Coronation Scot’, a feat he achieved with 4468 ‘Mallard’, one of the LNER’s “Silver Jubilee” streamlined trains, on 3rd July 1938. Also covered are the five other A4s still in existence: ‘Union of South Africa’, ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’, ‘Bittern’, ‘Dwight D Eisenhower’ and ‘Dominion of Canada’. Includes the ‘Mission Impossible’ temporary repatriation of Dwight D Eisenhower and Dominion of Canada in October 2012, their cosmetic restoration whilst here and the momentous events showcasing all six A4s that were held during their stay: the first Great Gathering in July 2013, Barrow Hill Live September 2013, the Autumn Great Gathering October 2013 and the Great Goodbye in February 2014 at the Locomotion Museum.
