Maunsell’s Southern Railway V Class (a.k.a. Schools Class) locomotives were the most powerful 4-4-0s to operate in the UK. This book records the class’s last three years in service before their withdrawal and replacement by diesel and electric traction.
The photos are arranged in order of loco number, mostly one photograph per page, with details of depot allocations, withdrawal and scrapping or preservation being given for each locomotive. The locomotives are depicted on shed and on a variety of passenger trains including railtours, inter-regional services, and trains between London and the Kent coast just before the introduction of the full electric service.
Contains around 100 black & white photographs, all accompanied by captions. Hardback. 80 pages.
