This book has been published to mark the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1825. It looks at how rail travel has evolved over the last 200 years, starting with chapters on the beginning of rail travel and changes in railway carriage design from the basic open coaches of the early days to their more comfortable successors that became the norm by the late 19th and early 20th century.

There are also chapters on narrow gauge and light railways, excursion and special trains such as the Flying Scotsman and the Golden Arrow, underground and commuter railways, accidents, and developments in alternatives to steam locos in the form of diesel and electric traction. The last chapter looks at heritage railways and steam-hauled charter trains on the main line where this form of traction can still be enjoyed today.

The book contains a good selection of archive black & white photos and drawings, and there is also a small colour section. 20 colour and 80 black & white illustrations. 112 pages.
