A pictorial record of the Sierra Leone Government Railway, from its formation to the start of the 2020s. Contains a collection of photographs showcasing this idiosyncratic African narrow gauge system through all the eras of its operation. The book is divided into five main sections:
- The Early Years – 1897 to 1909
- The Sierra Leone Railway at Work – 1910 to 1966
- Heading for Closure – 1967 to 1975
- Rediscovery and Restoration 2004 to 2005
- Preservation and the National Museum
The book begins with a brief history of the Sierra Leone Railway and further historical information is provided within the photograph captions.
Publications relating to the Sierra Leone Railway are few and far between, and high quality images scarce because so much was destroyed during the ten years of civil unrest in the 1990s. The Sierra Leone Government Railway: From Creation to Preservation has managed to obtain images from many different sources to create this important record.
A remarkable story of rediscovery and 21st century preservation. 120 pages Hardback.
