The Fall & Rise of the Cavan & Leitrim Railway (MLML)

Back Order

An illustrated review telling the story of the final years of operation of the narrow gauge Cavan & Leitrim Railway in the north-west of Ireland and the recent revival of a section of the line as a heritage operation.

The line’s primary traffic was coal from several mines in the area, but it also provided a vital passenger service. The Fall and Rise of the Cavan & Leitrim Railway begins with a journey in photographs along the line, and goes on to describe and illustrate the decline of the line following the reduction in coal traffic, leading to final closure in March 1959. The final day, including the remarkable crowds that turned out to witness the closure, is recounted in detail

The interim period during which track was removed is recorded, before moving on to the beginning of the revival in 1992, when a fledgling preservation group began to resurrect the line. Their work at the base in Dromod since 1992 and their plans for the future are reviewed.

The book concludes with a photo miscellany of the Cavan & Leitrim Railway, including both archive and recent images. 80 pages.
