An illustrated review of how a network of express trains were introduced to Germany during the 1970s, through the introduction of the IC concept. These new trains and new brandings were the forerunners of today’s high speed network and have formed the blueprint for many similar networks of domestic and international services across Europe

The publication is presented as a series of articles examining different aspects of the IC network, It begins with a look at the predecessors of the IC network, including the F-Zuge and Trans-Europ Express. It also looks at some of the heavy steam locomotives that were used to haul express trains in the 1960s, before moving on to the new electric standard, in the form of DB Class 103.

As well as the locomotives, Bahn Extra 3/2021: IC 1971-79: Die Erste Episode also examines the rolling stock used for IC services and looks at new standards in comfort and service brought about from the 1971 change of direction. Several premier named trains are examined in detail

The book moves on to look at similar approaches taken elsewhere during the period, focusing particularly on Swiss Railways and the changes enabled following the introduction of their first bogie electric locomotive. It also takes a look at IC services away from the electrified network, and at related international developments.

Well illustrated, mainly in colour. 98 pages. German text.

This volume also comes with a complimentary 55-minute DVD containing footage of Class 44 steam locomotives at work during the 1970s.
