The Waldviertelbahn is a scenic narrow gauge railway centred on Gmünd in Lower Austria. Its lines to Groß Gerungs to the south, and Litschau to the north, run through picturesque countryside and woodland, passing imposing granite outcrops and clear blue lakes.

Bahnen im Waldviertel 1964-1987 is an illustrated survey of the lines as recorded in photographs from the collection of Karl Wildberger, a railway enthusiast with a passion for the changing railway scene. The period covers the gradual decline of steam traction and the introduction of new diesel Classes 2045, 2050 and 2143. Wildberger was fascinated by new diesel and electric traction at a time when many other photographers were not interested in them.

The steam locomotives held their own alongside the diesel locomotives for a very long time and we see many examples of Class 399 steam locos in the beautiful natural landscape. The photographs are presented in one-per-page format. 120 pages. Hardback. German text.
