175 Jahre Eisenbahn in Simmering (Sutton Zeitreise)

£23.95
Back Order

A pictorial history of railways in the Simmering area of Wien (Vienna) published to mark the 175th anniversary of rail transport serving the district, the Raaber Bahn between Wien and Bruck an der Leitha being the first railway to reach the area in 1846. This line is covered in the first chapter, and the topics covered in the other chapters are:

  • The Ostbahn towards Stadlau
  • The Schlachthaus- und Haidebahn, an industrial railway serving (as the name suggests) a slaughterhouse, a gasworks and a power station
  • The S-Bahn line to Aspang and Wien Airport
  • Lesser known industrial and field railways, such as those serving inland ports and timber works, and a never realised scheme for a special underground railway conveying coffins and dead bodies to the Zentralfriedhof (main cemetery).
  • Tramways in Simmering
  • Railway workshops and depots

Each chapter starts with a short introduction, followed by several pages of historic photos mostly dating from between the early 1900s and the 1970s. At the back there is a chronology of main developments from 1803 to 2014 and a map showing all railways that have existed in Simmering over the last 175 years.

120 pages. Over 150 photos, mostly black & white. German text. Hardback.
