This DVD contains footage relating to the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, in November 2019. Contains footage, much of it previously unseen, of railways around Berlin in the 30 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Covers the main developments occurring during this time, including main line railways and the city’s extensive S-Bahn system. There are views of the Wall being built and an interview with a signaller who was on night shift during its construction in the early hours of 13 August 1961 and recalls seeing S-Bahn trains that would never reach their intended destinations because of the closure of the East-West border. This is followed by views of the border controls at Friedrichstrasse, abandoned cross-border railway lines, and a driver’s eye view of a U-Bahn train passing non-stop through the closed stations located in East Berlin, whilst working on the West Berlin network. Also shows the fall of the Wall and the resulting mass influx of visitors from the DDR to the West and a Ludmilla diesel-hauled special train from Stendal. The next few sequences show the lines and stations that had been closed as a result of the building of the Wall being reopened during the 1990s and early 2000s. As well as U-Bahn and S-Bahn lines, the new tram routes which opened access into the former West Berlin are also featured. This period also saw many changes to the rolling stock scene, and there is coverage of the last runs of the famous Stadtbahner and Class 477 S-Bahn EMUs as well as several sequences showing their modern day successors in action. Also shown is the official opening of Berlin Hauptbahnhof in 2006 on the site of the former Lehrter Stadtbahnhof, along with footage of the new station under construction. There is also coverage of the city’s other new and rebuilt stations such as Berlin-Spandau and Südkreuz. German commentary. 58 minutes running time.
