An illustrated survey of freight only lines in northern England and North Wales. The featured lines fall into two broad categories: Lines constructed solely for the conveyance of freight that have never seen a passenger train, and lines that formerly carried regular passenger services but have seen those services withdrawn at some time in the past.
All the photographs are described as being from the modern era, although the oldest example dates from the 1960s. Many different traffic flows are illustrated and numerous diesel locomotive types, captured in a multitude of liveries. Some of the illustrations show freight terminals or loading/unloading points.
Not all of the illustrations show freight trains. A number of railtours and special workings are also featured, including a small number of steam-hauled trains. Caption detail provides further anecdotal information about each photograph.
