A comprehensive and well-illustrated history of the line linking Mansfield with Rolleston via Southwell. The line, operated by the Midland Railway for much of its existence was used by local passenger trains and also served many of the collieries in the area. It also provided a rail connection to Southwell race course and saw frequent day excursion trains during its heyday.

Author, Robert Western traces the history of the line from its conception in the mid-19th century through to the closure of the line in the 1980s as coal traffic was dwindling. The book examines how the railway came to exist, how it was used over the years and looks at the reasons for its demise. A further chapter examining the motive power used on the line over the years is also included.

Well-illustrated throughout with archive black & white photographs, maps and track diagrams. 112 pages.
