This book traces the formation and early years of operation of the Hull & Barnsley Railway; a railway built to link the collieries of South Yorkshire with the port of Hull. The railway faced competition from its larger neighbours, but managed to achieve a settled existence and made a profit. This first volume looks at the building of the railway and its docks in Hull, as well as at the early years of operation up to 1899. Also looks at locomotives and rolling stock operated by the company during this period. Well illustrated with black & white photographs and maps. 230 pages.
