The End of the Woodhead Route: Electric Trains Stop Here (Amberley)

1 In Stock

This book was originally intended for publication to coincide with the closure of the line in 1981, but several factors meant the finishing touches were never applied and the book lay in storage for nearly 40 years.

Transport historian Stephen Heginbotham has updated and added to the original manuscript, which looks at the rise and fall of the 1500 V DC electrification scheme and at the electric locomotives used on the line. Each section of the Woodhead route is then looked at in turn, with an interesting narrative accompanied by a selection of good quality previously unpublished photographs from the camera of Ian Blackburn.

The End of the Woodhead Route: Electric Trains Stop Here tells the story of this iconic part of the British landscape, including the regrettable closure of the line. Most of the 130 photographs are in black & white, with some colour material. 96 pages.
