Steam Memories: North East Scotland (Totem)

David Spaven has compiled this album of black & white photos from across the former network of the Great North of Scotland Railway radiating from Aberdeen taken by railway photographer Neville Stead, mostly dating from the 1950s and early 1960s during the last few years of operation of much of the network. There is also a charter train hauled by 60009 “Union of South Africa” at Aberdeen Ferryhill in 1979. Today the only surviving section of the former GNoSR network is that between Aberdeen and Keith, the eastern section of the Aberdeen–Inverness line.

The first few photos are of passenger and freight trains and light engines in and around the city of Aberdeen itself. Apart from the still extant line to Keith, long-gone parts of the network featured include the lines to Ballater, Fraserburgh, Peterhead and Boat of Garten (the latter nowadays being partly operational as the Strathspey Railway at the Aviemore end and the Keith & Dufftown Railway at the Keith end). There is a good mixture of ex-GNoSR locos and others such as ex-LMS Coronation Class and ex-North British Railway Class D34s.

Hardback. 80 pages. Approximately 80 black & white photos.
