Photographs are presented in one-per-page format, with an extensive caption at the foot of each page, providing a great deal of background information about the location and train pictured.

Includes images of passenger and freight trains, many tackling the steep inclines found on the lines around this hilly region of England. Both of the region's main lines are featured; the West Coast Main Line over Shap summit and the world-famous Settle to Carlisle line, along with the Cumbrian Coast line, Tebay to Barnard Castle, Settle Junction to Lancaster and many of the branch lines in the area including:
