A collection of high quality black and white images illustrating the Southern Region's fleet of EMUs, in the period from nationalisation in 1948 to the end of the Brighton Belle in the early 1970s. This period saw a wide range of pre-war designed units in regular service and the introduction of the first British Railways modern EMUs.
The book has been produced in the fiftieth anniversary year of the Southern Electric Group and includes detailed captions from SEG stalwart, David Brown, the renowned author of many books concerning the Southern Electric. As well as illustrating a variety of vintage rolling stock, the book also captures a very different railway environment to that of today.
Southern Electrics Scrapbook Volume 1 contains ten chapters, each looking at a particular aspect of Southern Region operation during the period:
- Atmospheric Electrics
- Signal Check
- Boat Trains
- Pullman Travel
- Take Care at Crossings
- Not in Passenger Service
- Everyday Service
- Works and Depot Visits
- Something New
- Service Life Over
The authors have been given access to the photographic collections of several leading photographers of the day to compile this excellent collection of images, recalling what many might regard as the halcyon days of the Southern Electrics. 176 pages. Hardback.
