Part of the Irwell Press ‘Book Of’ series, this book is the last of four volumes covering the Great Western Railway Hall Class. Compiled by Ian Sixsmith this volume looks at the Modified Halls; locomotives 6959–6999 and 7900–7929 which were designed by Frederick Hawksworth. First built in 1944 his design incorporated a very different cylinder and frame construction, along with smoke box alterations resulting in an increased superheat. Content includes an history of the class, plus statistical data for all class members in the featured number range, including allocation histories, works overhauls, boilers, tenders, names, livery variations and mileages. 167 black & white photographs have been used to illustrate the featured class members.
